Clint B.’s Japanese Auction Site Finds

This is my very first real setup. Before this, I had crappy computer speakers hooked to my TV. I pieced this together while stationed here in Yokosuka, Japan and everything was purchased from Japanese auction sites.

It took me about a year and a half to put it all together because I was hunting for the right deals. There was a lot of getting outbid and disappointment in “the one that got away” but in the end, I’m happy with what I’ve ended up with and the price was right, under $400 for everything together shipping included.

The Diatone DS-600zx speakers had dried out and hardened surrounds on the woofer and off-brand replacement tweeters. Some treatment with a softener (Dot4 brake fluid), some searching and patience on the auction sites for the correct tweeters and they were right as rain.

My Sansui AU-D707F integrated amplifier is in good shape and works great for everything that I have tested so far.

The newest addition is the Pioneer PL-1200A Turntable, it’s a direct drive unit and sounds great with the Audio Technica AT105 attached. The only thing I had to do was give it a deep clean and spray out the potentiometers with contact cleaner to get the speed to hold steady.

I love the setup but I can’t really compare to other systems as I don’t know anyone with a good setup….only sound bars and crappy Chinese surround sound setups and my stuff blows those out of the water in terms of enjoyment.

I’ll be bringing this back to the U.S. when I PCS and hopefully, I can go to some different Hi-Fi shops for some comparisons.
