The Dirty Truth About "Restored" Vintage Gear
Here at Skylabs Audio, one of the most frequently asked questions we get is, "Should I restore my vintage stereo?". Usually, people fall into one of two extreme camps: those who want to replace every single capacitor and transistor, and those who believe "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Today, we are cutting through the arguments to help you figure out what is actually right for your beloved vintage audio equipment.
"Restored" vs. "Serviced": Knowing the Difference
If you are shopping for vintage gear online, the two words you will see most often are "restored" and "serviced". The problem is that these terms are heavily abused.
A true restoration generally means the unit has been brought as close to new as possible. This includes replacing capacitors and known failing transistors, performing factory service bulletins, deep-cleaning circuit boards, adjusting the bias and DC offset, and aligning the AM/FM tuner. It should also address issues with the wood cabinetry.
"Serviced," on the other hand, is a massive red flag term because it has no true definition. To a reputable technician, "serviced" means dusting the inside, checking for bulging capacitors, testing voltages, cleaning contacts, and running the unit under stress for a few hours. To a shady online seller, it might just mean they wiped down the faceplate, swapped a lightbulb, and sprayed some Deoxit on a noisy knob.
Sellers know that slapping the word "serviced" on a listing adds monetary value. We recently heard from a buyer who did a deep dive into online listings and caught a seller using the exact same photo of a "parts bag" (to prove components were replaced) across three completely different Marantz receiver models. Always ask for documentation when buying, and hang onto your own repair receipts to retain your gear's value.
What Does It Actually Cost?
If you are taking your gear to a technician, the cost largely depends on the complexity of the piece. There is a massive difference between servicing an 18-watt entry-level receiver and a flagship monster amp.
Most shops charge a basic bench fee ranging from $75 to $150 just to diagnose the equipment and quote a repair. From there:

Basic Servicing: Getting your unit working again, changing out a couple of lamps, or replacing a bad capacitor might run you around $150.

Full Restorations: Expect a massive time commitment. A full restoration can take 10 to 40 hours of a technician's time. You are typically looking at $600 for a smaller unit, all the way up to $1,500 or even $2,000+ for a massive receiver.
The "Bulletproof" Myth
We often hear customers say, "I don't care about the cost, I want that thing to be bulletproof".
Here is the hard truth: Bulletproof electronics do not exist. Even if you replace every single capacitor and resistor, original parts like circuit boards, potentiometers, and switches can still fail. Furthermore, even brand-new, expensive components have a natural failure rate. It is also worth mentioning that user error—like crossing speaker wires, poor ventilation, or cats chewing through cables—is responsible for a massive amount of gear failure.
Will Restoring It Ruin the "Warm" Vintage Sound?
Many audiophiles are terrified of losing that signature "warm" vintage sound by introducing modern components.
This might bake your noodle, but that "warm" sound is often just the sound of dying components. As original capacitors dry out and drift in value, the bass response becomes dull and the highs roll off. Old transistors also degrade and become noisy, acting like little white noise generators in your signal path.
Getting new components into your stereo doesn't ruin the sound; it actually gets it closer to what it originally sounded like brand new back in the day.

If you don't want to replace every single part but still want reliable gear, here is our personal "happy medium" for the equipment we keep:

Solid State Amplifiers/Receivers: We replace the power supply capacitors and swap out any known problematic components.

Tube Amplifiers: It is a blanket rule—all old oil and wax capacitors have got to go.

Speakers: We throw out crappy electrolytic capacitors in the crossovers, but if they have good film caps that still sound great, we leave them alone.
Whatever you decide to do, do it sooner rather than later. Good technicians are retiring, and they are getting harder to find.
