Billy Joel entered 1977 with a great track record but in need of a breakthrough. Pairing with producer Phil Ramone (Carly Simon, Simon & Garfunkel), who developed the requisite ingredients missing from Joel’s formula, the singer-songwriter became a household name and chart-topping success courtesy of his fifth studio album, The Stranger. 

Ramone's mastery of the recording studio provided a sublime sonic context for Joel's timeless songs and classic performances. The Stranger went on to became one of the top-selling albums of that year, peaking at No. 2 on the charts. It went on to be certified 10-times platinum in sales: a pop-rock benchmark.

The Stranger won two Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Just The Way You Are," was nominated for Album of the Year, and generated four indelible singles: "Just The Way You Are," "Only The Good Die Young," "She's Always A Woman," and "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)," which have all gone on to become absolute classics.
