Nagaoka MP-100 Moving Permalloy Phono Cartridge

Everybody's first "real" cartridge upgrade tends to be an Ortofon or an Audio-Technica, and there's nothing wrong with either. But if you've never had a Nagaoka on your turntable, you're missing one of the most quietly satisfying entry points in all of analog.

Nagaoka has been building styli and cartridges in Japan since 1940, and they're one of the few companies that makes every part in-house. The MP-100 sits at the bottom of the MP line, but "entry level" here means the same cartridge body as the MP-110 with a 0.6 mil conical stylus up front — not a stripped-down design.

That "MP" stands for Moving Permalloy, Nagaoka's own spin on the moving magnet idea. An ultra-light permalloy oscillator sits at the back end of the cantilever, driven by a samarium cobalt magnet in the body — so you get a healthy 5mV output that any standard MM phono stage will handle without complaint. The permalloy shield casing keeps hum and noise down, which matters more than people admit on vintage gear with older wiring.

Sonically, the conical profile gets dismissed too often. Plenty of listeners prefer the present, muscular sound of a conical over the endless chase for high-frequency detail — vocals in particular come through beautifully. It's a warm, easygoing, musical cartridge that makes worn records sound like records instead of a diagnostic report. Perfect for jazz, soul, classic rock, and the beat-up thrift store haul.

Best part: the stylus is user-replaceable, so when you wear it out you're buying a needle instead of a whole cartridge — and you can later drop in the MP-200's boron-cantilever stylus for a real step up without touching the body. That's an upgrade path, not a dead end.
