Nagaoka MP-110H Phono Cartridge with Headshell
The most-recommended moving magnet cartridge in the world, factory-mounted and aligned. Plug it in and play a record.
The MP-110 has been the default "just buy this one" answer on vinyl forums for years — warm, detailed, forgiving of ordinary records, and priced where it embarrasses cartridges well above it. The H version removes the only real obstacle between you and owning one: the mounting.
If you've never done it, cartridge installation is four tiny screws, four fragile clips, a protractor, and a half hour of squinting at overhang and zenith while your patience evaporates. If you have done it, you already know why a factory-aligned option is worth paying for. Nagaoka mounts and aligns the MP-110 at the factory on their own headshell. If your turntable takes a removable headshell — most Technics, most vintage Japanese decks, most DJ-style tables — you drop it in, set tracking force and antiskate, and you're listening.
The cartridge is the standard MP-110: Moving Permalloy design with a super-fine polished 0.4 x 0.7 mil elliptical bonded diamond on an aluminum cantilever, samarium cobalt magnet, permalloy shield casing. The elliptical tip sits deeper in the groove wall than a conical and follows the modulation more accurately, which is where the 110's reputation for detail and separation comes from — without the brittle edge that usually rides along with "more detail."
The headshell earns its keep too. Precision-machined 2.4mm high-rigidity aluminum with gold-plated leads, in a compound chosen for rigidity and low resonance, Baerwald-aligned at 50mm to suit a wide range of tonearms and adjustable if you want to fine-tune. Total weight is 16.7g with the cartridge, which sits inside the counterweight range of most standard arms — no heavier weight to hunt down.
And you own the headshell permanently. Move up the MP line later and you swap the cartridge, keep the shell. The JN-P110 stylus is user-replaceable as always, so a worn tip never means starting over.
