Nagaoka MP-200 Moving Permalloy Phono Cartridge

The MP-200 is where the Nagaoka line stops asking you to grade on a curve. This one competes on its own terms.

The headline change is boron. Nagaoka swaps the aluminum cantilever for a low-mass, high-strength boron rod, and if you've never heard what that does, it's the single most audible upgrade in the entire MP series. Boron is stiffer and lighter than aluminum, so it transmits groove information without flexing or ringing along the way. Frequency response opens up to 23kHz, channel separation climbs to 25dB, and compliance rises to 7.2 — meaning it tracks more accurately with less force on your records.

What comes out the other side is a cartridge of genuine contrasts. The Nagaoka warmth is still very much intact: organic, fluid, with a midrange that makes vocals and horns sound like they're breathing in the room. But the smoothness no longer comes at the cost of detail. Where a lot of "warm" cartridges paper over the fine texture — the luster on a cymbal, the decay of a piano note, the shove of a dynamic swing — the MP-200 hands all of it back to you. Reviewers who've spent time with it consistently describe it as both generous and articulate, which is not a combination you get often at any price.

It's a natural fit for jazz, classical, vocal records, and anything acoustic, though it certainly doesn't complain about rock. And it's a lot of listeners' last cartridge — the point where the itch stops and you just play records. If you do eventually go looking, the MP-300 and MP-500 are up there. Most people don't need to.

Setup is as easy as the rest of the line: standard half-inch mount, 6.5 grams, 4mV output into a normal 47k MM stage, no exotic loading. The JN-P200 stylus is user-replaceable, so a worn tip costs you a needle rather than a cartridge. Give it 30 hours to break in.
