Nagaoka MP-300 Moving Permalloy Phono Cartridge

At the MP-300, Nagaoka finally rebuilds the body.

Every cartridge below this one in the line — the 100 through the 200 — shares the same familiar shell. The MP-300 gets a new one: an ultra-rigid body designed to kill resonance before it ever colors the signal, and the weight jumps from 6.5 to 8 grams as a result. That's the piece people miss when they look at spec sheets and see "boron cantilever, elliptical stylus" on both the 200 and the 300 and wonder what they're paying for. The answer is the structure holding it all together. A cartridge body that rings is a cartridge body adding its own signature to your records, and this one doesn't.

The measurable results follow: response extends to 25kHz, channel balance tightens to within 1dB, and the whole presentation gets quieter and more composed. What you hear is soundstage. The MP-300 is the model where images stop being vague left-center-right placements and become specific — a wider, deeper, better-defined stage with performers occupying actual space in it. Michael Fremer included it in his blind cartridge comparison work at Analog Planet, which is not a room most moving magnets get invited into.

The tonal balance stays unmistakably Nagaoka. Refined, detailed at every frequency, and — this is the important part — easy to listen to for hours. Sophisticated without being clinical. It's nimble on the grooves and it stays out of its own way, which is why the sessions with it tend to run long.

One setup note worth reading: tracking force drops to 1.3–1.8g, lighter than the models below, and the 7.8-gram body is heavier. If you're running a lighter tonearm, check your counterweight range before ordering. Output is 3mV, still fine for any standard 47k MM phono stage, but a very low-gain vintage stage is worth a sanity check. The JN-P300 stylus is user-replaceable as always. Thirty hours to break in.
