Nagaoka MP-500 Moving Permalloy Phono Cartridge

The step from the MP-300 to the MP-500 is the stylus profile. Everything below it uses an elliptical; the 500 gets a super-fine polished line contact diamond. That's not a small distinction. A line contact tip has a long, narrow contact patch that reaches deeper into the groove wall and reads sections of the modulation an elliptical simply rides over — particularly at the inner grooves, where geometry works against you and most cartridges start to fall apart. It also spreads wear over a larger area, so it's gentler on your records and lasts longer than a conventional tip.

Behind it sits the same super-rigid body from the MP-300, the boron cantilever, and the samarium cobalt generator, now measuring out to 27dB of channel separation and 8.5 compliance — the highest in the range, and the reason it tracks difficult passages with such composure. There's also a set-screw system holding the stylus assembly into the body, which addresses the one legitimate structural complaint people have about replaceable-stylus designs.

The sound is where the conventional wisdom about MM-versus-MC quietly falls apart. This is a big, neutral, dimensional presentation with real high-frequency extension and the ability to handle wide dynamic swings and fine low-level texture in the same breath. It made Stereophile's Recommended Components, and it's been in continuous production for years because nobody has found much reason to change it.

The practical case is worth stating plainly: a comparable moving coil means matching compliance to your arm, finding a phono stage with enough gain and the right loading, and — when the stylus wears — sending the whole cartridge back to the manufacturer. The MP-500 runs into any standard 47k MM input at 3mV and takes a user-replaceable JN-P500 when the time comes. That's a meaningfully different ownership experience for a comparable level of performance.

A few setup notes. It's 7.88 grams and tracks at 1.3–1.8g, so confirm your counterweight range. And because it's a fine-line profile, VTA/SRA adjustment genuinely matters here — if your arm has it, spend an evening dialing it in. It rewards the effort more than any other cartridge in the line. Nagaoka rates stylus life at roughly 150–200 hours of home use before tone quality starts to slip; replace it before it costs you records.
