The MP-500 is the cartridge that makes the argument for the whole moving magnet format. The step up from the MP-300 is the stylus profile: everything below uses an elliptical, and the 500 gets a super-fine polished line contact diamond. That's not a small distinction. A line contact tip has a long, narrow contact patch that reaches deeper into the groove wall and reads modulation an elliptical rides straight over — particularly at the inner grooves, where the geometry turns unforgiving and most cartridges start to lose the plot. It also spreads wear across a larger area, so it lasts longer and is gentler on your records while it does it.

Behind it sits the same super-rigid, low-resonance body from the MP-300, a boron cantilever, and the samarium cobalt generator, measuring out to 27dB separation and 8.5 compliance — the highest in the range, and the reason it stays composed through difficult passages. The sound is where the conventional wisdom about MM-versus-MC quietly falls apart: big, neutral, dimensional, with real high-frequency extension and the ability to handle wide dynamic swings and fine low-level texture in the same breath. It's a Stereophile Recommended Component and it's been in continuous production for years because nobody has found much reason to change it.

The case for the H version at this level is straightforward. A line contact profile is the least forgiving of setup error in the entire lineup — the whole point of that tip geometry is precise contact with the groove wall, and precise contact requires precise alignment. Nagaoka aligns it at the factory on their own headshell. If your turntable takes a removable shell, you drop it in, set tracking force and antiskate, and you're listening.

The shell is precision-machined aluminum with gold-plated leads, Baerwald-aligned at 50mm to suit a wide range of arms, adjustable if you want to fine-tune.

Setup notes worth reading. Tracking force is 1.3–1.8g, lighter than the models below. The MP-500 body is 8 grams rather than 6.5, so this package runs heavier than the 100H through 200H — check your counterweight range on a lighter arm, and ask us if you're unsure. And because it's a fine-line profile, VTA/SRA adjustment genuinely matters here; if your arm has it, spend an evening dialing it in. It rewards the effort more than anything else in the line.

The JN-P500 stylus is user-replaceable, which is the whole practical argument against a comparable moving coil: no shipping a cartridge back to Japan for a retip, no weeks of downtime. Nagaoka rates stylus life at roughly 150–200 hours of home use.
