Nagaoka MP-700 Moving Permalloy Phono Cartridge

Nagaoka took fifteen years to replace the MP-500. When they finally did it, they didn't tweak — they rebuilt the thing from the suspension out.

The MP-700 arrived in May 2025 as the new flagship of the MP series, timed to Nagaoka's 85th anniversary and launched at High End Munich. Three changes matter, and they compound.

First, the stylus. Where the MP-500 uses a line contact, the 700 gets a nude micro-ridge diamond cut to 0.12 x 0.3 mil — one of the most demanding profiles anyone makes, and finer than a human hair. Nude, not bonded, so there's no mounting block adding mass behind the tip.

Second, the suspension. Nagaoka fitted the softest damper in the entire MP range, which on paper sounds like a recipe for instability. Their answer is a newly integrated suspension wire in the pivot system that controls cantilever movement without restricting it. The result is 30 compliance — by a wide margin the highest in the line — and a stylus that follows the groove more freely than anything Nagaoka has built.

Third, the body. Ultra-duralumin frame and shield case, finished in a three-layer treatment of nickel plating, black tin plating, and an insulating coat that cuts static buildup and resists heat and wear. The gold of the MP-500 gives way to a matte black that looks like what it costs.

The measurements back it up. Hi-Fi News found the MP-700 corrects the MP-500's gently rolled-off treble outright, with class-leading distortion figures and clean tracking of the maximum +18dB groove at under 0.5% distortion — at just 1.4 grams of downforce. Channel separation is rated at 30dB, three better than the 500, and response runs to 27kHz. Several reviewers suspect those factory numbers are conservative.

Here's the part worth sitting with. You get micro-ridge retrieval, MC-grade tracking precision, and 30dB separation — at 4mV into any ordinary 47k MM input. No step-up transformer, no gain hunting, no loading experiments. And when the stylus wears, you replace the JN-P700 assembly instead of shipping the cartridge back to Japan for a retip. Every unit is still hand-assembled and individually tested in Higashine, where Nagaoka makes over 90% of its own stylus tips.

One serious setup caveat, and we'd rather you hear it from us than find out the hard way: that high compliance means the MP-700 needs a low effective mass tonearm. Hi-Fi News flagged that the included headshell is on the heavy side, and pairing it with a heavier arm can push the arm/cartridge resonance down into record-warp territory. Their reviewer swapped to a lighter Technics headshell on an SL-1200GR2. Also worth the time: this is a fine-line profile, so VTA/SRA adjustment genuinely pays off. If your arm has it, dial it in.
